Critic Reviews

Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 review

musictech.com

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen stands out with its pro-grade preamps, impressive dynamic range, and user-friendly features, making it a strong contender for both home studios and portable setups. The upgraded Gain Halos and Auto Gain function simplify the recording process. However, the inability to use the new Air mode's harmonic drive separately from its presence peak is a letdown, especially for those seeking greater tonal control. While the price has slightly increased, the overall quality and versatility of the 4i4 still make it a worthwhile investment.

Clean, lightweight, rugged, versatile

Building new studio and ultra-portable live rig, was dissatisfied with options available on the smaller / lighter / budget scale, preferring 4 inputs, and patient enough to wait. Enter the new Scarlett 4i4, with future-ready and super handy USB-C connector (e.g. plug straight into IPad Pro, connect midi gear via midi) and the 4 inputs - guitar, mic, 2 synths (or effects, inputs, etc), all bus powered. Smaller footprint than 2i4 predecessor, and 300+ grams lighter, in a rugged, smooth enclosure - and found one at a ridiculous price, prompting early purchase. The bigger 8i6 is really a 6i4 if you don't need SPDIF, the required wall wart is unfortunate, though 2 headphone outputs are handy. The 2i2 doesn't include MIDI ports and isn't much smaller or lighter. Comprehensive testing and full review to come, but others should know it looks like the real deal so far, and worth checking out for their studio/live needs.

one flaw

works great, good amount of IO, and the loopback input is a great feature, but JESUS, why do you have to use their app to change the gain setting? was it really that much cheaper instead of just putting a button where it says inst? the lower end Scarlett models all have buttons to change from mic to instrument level, so why is this one different? what were they trying to achieve with their garbage proprietary software that only works half the time?

agyky

Well well well

Best priced audio interface I've ever used. I use this ai for recording guitars.

Good to start

A good starter interface but It doesn't have enough ports for me. The audio quality is great though and It works great until you realize you have too many instruments and not enough space to have them all at once.

davidik
