Highly personalised, both electrically and aesthetically
The overall ability and strength in depth of Gibson's Les Paul guitar leaves little requirement for modification, although in this instance I opted for a series of "upgrades" which were chosen with the intention if widening the instrument's inherent wide ranging capabilities... . I replaced Gibson's standard humbuckers with a pair of Bare Knucle Pickups' "Painkillers" which added more crispness and attack, especially higher up the scale, to the guitar's already superb tonal range. . I installed a Kent Armstrong single coil pickup between the humbuckers, which adds a rich, silky midrange to the tone, without unbalancing the overall sound. . A selectable/bypassable, active "Tone shaper" in the form of a "push/pull" enabled potentiometer sized unit affords a very subtle pre-amplifier and selective filtering to boost frequencies from bass, through middle and high, to Bass/Top boost. . All other modifications are purely aesthetic and just pander only to my love of individuality

Here we have a rare photo of Bernie using a 1972-1973 Les Paul Deluxe. The Les Paul Deluxe in this period practically replaced the Standards. They came with mini humbuckers and a 3 piece pancake body. The reason why it was so rare to see Bernie with a Les Paul because he highly favored using a brown rosewood telecaster over his Les Paul
"This is my main rhythm guitar that I play a lot of rhythm on and this is a '52 Goldtop. This is a real '52. And the bridge has been changed out. It has a real low neck angle which I love, and the tailpiece is all the way down into the wood, which kind of makes it resonate good and with this tailpiece, it stays in tune really good. This is a motherfucker of a guitar right here. Stays in tune great, plays great, sounds amazing, you know, so for playing 8th notes, you know, and for just all kinds of parts. Freddy King played this. I'm a blues nerd, and so for playing blues solos... B.B. King played one of these, on the early records. [...] Check out the neck on that. It's so incredibly awesome. It's very light-weight resonant guitar, so I'm very fortunate to have that. And I was really lucky to get this guitar." - Greenberg about 1952 Gibson Les Paul.
