Critic Reviews

M-Audio Profire 2626

soundonsound.com

The M-Audio ProFire 2626 impresses with its eight preamps, versatile DSP cue mixer, and extensive I/O options, making it a stellar choice for budget-conscious project studios. While it boasts solid sound quality and compatibility with Pro Tools M-Powered, its operation is somewhat restricted with Pro Tools, and the hardware metering is minimal. Despite these niggles, the ProFire 2626 delivers excellent value for money, offering a robust feature set that rivals higher-priced alternatives.

M-Audio Profire 2626 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The M-Audio ProFire 2626 is a powerful digital recording interface, ideal for musicians needing extensive connectivity with its 26 ins and outs. Its superb audio quality, high-quality preamps, and flexibility via its mixer/router make it a great choice for recording full bands or ensembles. The interface's standalone operation and separate headphone mixes add to its versatility. However, its mixer/router can be daunting for some users, and it lacks built-in effects like a channel compressor. Despite these minor setbacks, the ProFire 2626 is a solid investment for those requiring comprehensive recording capabilities.

Review: M-Audio Profire 2626 — AudioTechnology

audiotechnology.com

With its impressive array of features, the M-Audio ProFire 2626 stands out as a versatile and affordable digital recording interface. It offers more inputs and outputs than its competitors, such as the Digidesign 003, making it a fantastic choice for those working with ProTools. The eight high-quality mic preamps and built-in DSP for latency-free cue mixes enhance its value, while its ability to integrate with both ProTools HD and LE systems adds flexibility. However, the need to purchase ProTools M-Powered software separately is a slight drawback. Overall, it's a powerhouse for the price.

Gets the job done within a limited budget but support is non-existing

I bought this because it had the specs and was within my budget. It does get the job done but support is non-existing and drivers are not maintained for newer operating systems. Next time I'll go for an RME.G

jimmarchi1

yeah, I had a similar experience with a briefly popular PCI card interface... manufacturer went belly up and support disappeared for the drivers in mandatory OS upgrades of both Mac and Windows, totally annoying... that's when I swore off doing more than 1 or 2 channel overdubs at home and just strted booking studios.... its nice to go where the Neve onsoles are anyway.... can't beat 'em with a stick!

Well, they did not really went bankrupt. Tim Ryan, the founder of Midiman/M-Audio first sold his company for 174.000.000$ to Avid (owners of e.g. Digidesign Pro Tools) while remaining the general manager, not really bankrupt, I'd say. More recently M-Audio was sold to yet another major player (inMusic, who own brands like Akai Professional, Alesis...). You'd guess that maintaining your drivers while the hardware, interfaces and protocols are still in use would be reasonable to expect and achievable with a few 100 million dollars on your bank account. They just don't care about their users and I will not buy anything from M-Audio again...

jimmarchi1

its funny, when they were MIDIman they were great, I still have an old midiman controller...

Indeed. MIDIman was great, which was why I decided to give M-Audio a chance. Lessons learned here... Don't ever touch M-Audio gear again! :-)
