Deep Blue Delight

When we first plugged in the Deep Blue Delay, it was clear that Mad Professor continues to uphold its reputation for producing high-quality pedals. The pedal’s construction feels reassuringly solid, with a durable metal casing that promises to withstand the rigors of extensive gigging and practice sessions.

In terms of controls, the pedal boasts a refreshingly straightforward layout: Delay, Repeat, and Level knobs. This simplicity makes it extremely user-friendly, especially for those who prefer to dial in their settings quickly without getting lost in a sea of options. However, for us, the absence of a tap tempo option is a noticeable drawback, particularly considering its competitors like the TC Electronic Flashback, which offer more extensive features.

When it comes to sound, the Deep Blue Delay excels. The delay effect is natural and vintage-oriented, blending beautifully with our amp's tone and providing an organic decay with each repeat. It's not just sound; it's an experience. The pedal adds "size" and "ambience" to the soundscape without being intrusive, making it a fantastic addition to any setup aiming for a classic tape delay effect. That said, the repeats do fade after a while and the tails aren’t as lush as some might expect, which could be a limitation for those seeking endless echoes.

The Mad Professor Deep Blue Delay is perfect for musicians who prioritize ease of use and high sound quality in a robust package. If your style leans towards natural, vintage delay sounds and you don’t mind the absence of tap tempo, this pedal will likely become a staple on your board. However, if you require more versatility and a wider range of features, you might find it lacking compared to other options on the market.

The Mad Professor Deep Blue Delay pedal delivers a straightforward, high-quality delay experience with its compact design and user-friendly controls. It's perfect for players seeking essential delay functions without the complexity, offering a range from 25ms to 450ms. Pros include its ergonomic knobs and classic sound quality reminiscent of tape echo. However, the side-mounted outputs can be cumbersome, and the lack of tap tempo may deter some. musicradar.com

Mad Professor's Deep Blue Delay pedal impresses with its vintage tape-echo charm and user-friendly design. It offers warm, classic delay tones with a simple three-knob layout, making it easy to dial in the desired effect. The introduction of a PCB model brings the price down, expanding its appeal without sacrificing the renowned Mad Professor sound quality. However, the price may still be a tad high for some. Overall, the Deep Blue Delay is a creative tool that captures the essence of vintage delay, earning a positive nod for its tone and affordability.

Excellent

I actually made a clone of this pedal, but after having had the chance to compare it to the original recently I realized I could allow myself to review it since the clone sounds exactly the same.

All you need from a simple-controlled delay, there's actually not much I can say! I like the way the sounds decay very slightly with each repeat, it might sound imperfect to some but I find it gives it texture, makes it more organic.

Nevertheless, there's one thing I would love it to do : when you push the repeats up to maximum, I love it when a delay's feedback never ends, but this one does. It feeds back for sure, but it doesn't really grow and grow endlessly, it just fades after a while.

Oh and by the way, another cool feature: you can switch the pedal off, and the delaying will still be there when you switch it back on! Yeaaaaaah... Sometimes it's the small things.

thoroliversen

Great, warm sounding delay.

I'm using it only as a slapback delay. The reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is the lack of a tap tempo option and also wanting a loooonger delay than it provides.

robb_hood

It's great, but it will colour your sound a little... for some in an awesome way.

I use this for the slap. It slaps. It has that analogue style sound, open and airy, a bit of reverb in there. It's tails aren't so lush.

Yeah, I have a few BJFEE pedals, from Norway. Björn Juhl made them, he went on to design Mad Professor pedals. I have one that’s a very subtle overdrive I use all the time called the Honey Bee. And a BJFE EQ pedal (Sea Blue EQ) that’s amazing. I also have a Mad Professor Deep Blue delay pedal I use for a little color – I’m not big on changing my sound per song very much.
