Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Marshall Origin 20H.

Comparisons

  • The Origin 20H is compared to early plexi Marshalls, which themselves were based on modified Fender Bassmans; it doesn't deliver the expected JCM-type breakup.

    Source
  • The Origin 20H pairs poorly with stock Seventy-80 cabinets but excels with Vintage 30s or Greenbacks for classic rock tones.

    Source
  • The Origin 20H is described as delivering vintage Marshall tones, reminiscent of Duane Allman and Toy Caldwell, when paired with a Bluesbreaker pedal.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users find the Origin 20H sensitive to environmental factors like humidity and temperature, affecting tone consistency.

    Source
  • The built-in attenuation, offering 3W and 0.5W settings, is not sufficient for apartment use due to high volume output at all settings.

    Source
  • An owner found the Origin 20H unable to deliver sufficient bottom end when used with a fuzz pedal in a doom metal band context.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The amp is appreciated for bedroom-level playing, offering satisfying sound even at low volumes without needing vintage tone precision.

    Source
  • The amp excels in achieving an AC/DC-like barely distorted tone but struggles with higher gain settings compared to the DSL20.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the Origin 20H for its suitability in classic rock tones, especially when used with pedals, despite lacking the oomph for heavier genres.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • It's noted for being priced lower than many similar amps, making it necessary to try before buying if expecting a specific "Marshall tone."

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • The Plexi mod is popular for enhancing the amp's output, while some aim for a JTM45 sound modification for a different tonal character.

    Source
  • It's suggested to replace filter caps and screen grid resistors for increased longevity, but this service can be costly relative to the amp's price.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The amp's tonal and overdrive capabilities are mostly derived from its power section, necessitating high master volume levels for optimal performance.

    Source

Build quality

  • The Origin series reportedly uses thin PCB material with small traces and poor quality capacitors, which can lead to reliability issues over time.

Marshall ORI20H Origin 20-watt Tube Head Review - Killer Guitar Rigs

killerguitarrigs.com

The Marshall Origin 20H delivers authentic Plexi tones at an accessible price, making it a fantastic option for players seeking vintage sound in a modern format. Its sleek design and built-in attenuator enhance usability, perfect for home practice and live gigs alike. However, achieving the best tones requires some tweaking, particularly with the EQ settings, which may frustrate those expecting plug-and-play convenience. Additionally, it lacks high-gain distortion on its own, making it less ideal for metal without pedals. Overall, it shines as a versatile gigging amp and a reliable studio tool, though players should be prepared to work for their sound.

great amp

I get almost all my sound from my pedals, this is a brilliant amp for pedal users. I have both the Head and Combo versions and they really do stand up to hours of torture. It sounds good through a 4 x 12 and a 2 x 12. The DI is great and has a good clean sound. You can boost it without any dirt, or you can run it slightly dirty for more of a traditional plexi sound. I run one clean and one dirty, with either a Boss GT 100 or a Tech 21 RK5. I just wish the pilot light was red... my only complaint.

Incredible

My first real, real amplifier. Not a solid-state combo, a real tube amplifier. I can't express how happy I am with this - the voicing is classically vintage and sounds incredible. For the money, you cannot find a better amplifier. I wish it had a second channel, but a good drive pedal fixes that problem.

jimmarchi1

it actually has 2 channels in the vintage sense, they're just permanently jumpered to blend them instead of hacing 4 individual inputs and 2 volumes like the plexi the amp is inspired by.... you would not want to chanenl switch on this type of amp, most of the dirt is generated in the power section, even when using the master which I believe is the classic post phase inverter type. to do channel switching you would need to redesign the amp to be ore like an 800 where the dirt occurs early in the preamp from a cold biased triode that clips early. That's a great sound too, but its not what people are talking about when they say 'plexi'
