Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Novation Launch Control.

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the device's standalone capabilities with DIN MIDI ports, offering flexibility in DAWless setups.

    Source
  • Owners mention that the Launch Control XL MK2 excels in live performance scenarios but falls short as an Ableton DAW controller due to its non-motorized faders.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • A refurbished unit comes with a 3-year warranty, providing reassurance and cost savings compared to new purchases.

    Source
  • Some users find the $100 price increase from the previous version excessive, especially without significant feature additions beyond endless encoders.

    Source

Build quality

  • Despite being used and even in beat-up conditions, the Launch Control XL maintains functionality, indicating robust construction.

    Source
  • Some users report the newer encoders feel less durable than older models, with plastic shafts instead of metal, impacting their perceived longevity.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The Components Software simplifies programming and mapping, enabling users to create universal setups for different virtual instruments.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The device stores user templates, allowing users to switch between up to 8 configurations without losing settings when powered down.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Users effectively use the Launch Control XL in setups with up to six units, leveraging 48 faders and 144 knobs for extensive control.

    Source
  • The MK3 is particularly noted for its suitability in controlling hardware setups, thanks to its MIDI DIN outputs and standalone operation capability.

    Source
  • The device is praised for its live performance capabilities, with some users purchasing multiple units for this purpose despite its DAW control limitations.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Novation allows assigning up to 8 unique device IDs to avoid confusion in setups with multiple MIDI controllers, enhancing multi-unit performance.

    Source
  • The MK3 lacks motorized faders, which some users find less practical for DAW mixing where track settings frequently change.

    Source
  • Lack of LED rings around encoders and non-motorized faders are common concerns, affecting performance feedback and control efficiency.

    Source
  • The MK3 features 24 endless encoders with lights indicating relative brightness, improving visual feedback compared to previous models.

    Source
  • The MK3 version includes MIDI routing via USB and 5-pin DIN, addressing previous limitations for hardware integration without a computer.

    Source
  • The fader pickup feature allows for smoother adjustments, but non-motorized faders still lead to inaccurate mix control when switching tracks.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The MK3's design is considered sleeker and more robust than earlier models, with improved materials compared to older Novation gear perceived as flimsy.

    Source
  • The Behringer BCF2000 is noted for its motorized faders, offering a more tactile experience compared to the Launch Control's static faders.

    Source
  • The Akai APC40 MK2 is preferred by some for its LED feedback, highlighting a key feature lacking in the Launch Control.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some users have created custom OSC layouts with touchOSC to address parameter control issues, preferring physical knobs for tactile feedback.

Critic Reviews

Novation Launch Control, Launchpad Mini & Launchkey Mini

soundonsound.com

Novation Launch Control impresses with its robust build and ample controls, making it a solid choice for Ableton Live users seeking enhanced mixer functionality. While it shines as a companion to the Launchpad S, its standalone capabilities are commendable. However, users might find the controller-pickup issue when switching parameters a tad frustrating. Overall, it's a valuable addition for those looking to complete their Live setup.

unlke the the launch pad of the same generation, this is useful

read my review of the launchpad mk1 for my opinions on that, but as for this, much more useful. being able to control the pan and level of your 8 main tracks, and have an ease start stop button is much more useful then the launch pad in a studio setting

Can be brought anywhere

When I don't want to carry the huge Zero SL. Awesome feeling with these knobs. Unfortunatly, once I have assigned volumes and EQ's, I only have 4 FX remaining, and I can only control 2 tracks with these. One more line would have been awesome, but hey ! It's only 70€.

versatile effects controller with seamless integration for live sets and studio use

Another brilliant controller by Novation in their popular Launch range. I use this as basically my personal & extended effects unit so i can control alot of effects smoothly and quickly without the hassle of just using my Xone K2 as my mixer and effects controller. I can use the navigation buttons on the Control to move through my channels with the effects already there so i can quickly switch through them and use them whenever i want. The user mode also helps me so i can have my own unique effects and presets for my sets mapped to any parameter on the controller. This can be used as my backup mixer/controller if my Xone K2 ever happens to fail on me too which is very nice. I've also used this controller with FL studio and can come in handy when playing around and utilisting eq's, effects etc. in some cases when i try to get ideas for a song or remix.

Great controller

The Ableton integration could be a bit better in terms of factory templates, but that aside it is a solid product with great build quality.

molwax

endless array of possibilities

novation have done it again! coming up with the launch control that is a user-friendly and cheap to purchase too! made of good quality material, the launch control is a controller for just about anyway who wants to tweak their production in real-time.

lexplexus

Buggy But Still Great

Sometimes Ableton stops responding to it. Other than that, it's great. I use it in the studio but I'd have to test it more thoroughly before trusting it for a live situation.

futureboypnw

Great controller

16 assignable pots make automating easy and fun. Two banks both user and factory, allow 16 open pots and control over 8 mixer tracks

P

It's very good pair for launchpad S witch I love.

kemilc

Portable and amazing!

Great since it has a lot of knobs and you can easily store user mappings !

hatchc

Makes nice little adjustments

Brought it in a pair with launchpad s control pack and once I start making music and recording tracks it will definitely come in easy.
