    Source
  • Have a tech check the power supply caps for dryness, as failure can damage the power transformer and tubes.

    Source
  • Ensure the amp is cathode biased; no need for rebiasing if the resistor and cap are in spec during tube swaps.

The Mysterious Vox Pacemaker - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Vox Pacemaker, often overshadowed by its British cousins, offers a unique twist on the classic Vox sound, primarily due to its U.S. manufacturing origins under Thomas Organ. While it doesn't capture the quintessential Vox tone revered by enthusiasts, it presents a distinct alternative, especially for those interested in vintage solid-state amps. Its 17-watt output, transistor power section, and tremolo feature might appeal to collectors or those seeking a nostalgic piece. However, purists may find its divergence from the traditional Vox lineage a downside. Valued between $425 and $500, it’s a modest investment for a slice of amp history.

“I started out with a Vox Pacemaker, which I really love,” she says. With an EL84-driven, single 10” speaker, Vox never really caught on with the mainstream as a tube amp, but it still puts out a respectable 17 watts of power and has the classic Vox sound. “I had to use a Gibson reverb tank with it because it didn’t come with reverb, which is pretty essential,” she explains." - Neko Case on her tenor guitar collection: Fretboard Journal #2 cover story (Summer 2006)
