Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Boss MS-3 Multi Effects Switcher.

Features and functionality

  • The MS-3 cannot switch the order of loops or place internal effects between them, which limits flexibility in signal chain arrangement.

    Source
  • The MS-3 allows for parallel effect routing, enabling unique sound combinations like blending octave fuzz with gain pedals for a distinct lead tone.

    Source
  • The MS-3's three FX loops can be expanded using MIDI-compatible switchers like the Morningstar ML-10x, allowing more complex setups.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The HX Effects is praised for better sound quality, effects routing, and support, though it has a larger footprint and fewer loops than the MS-3.

    Source
  • While the MS-3 excels as a compact effects switcher, some users prefer the HX Stomp for its comprehensive all-in-one capabilities, despite its larger size.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for setups requiring one-click total recall for multiple sound presets, especially for vocalists needing quick changes.

    Source
  • Users find the MS-3 essential for reducing pedalboard size and minimizing tap-dancing during performances, especially beneficial for vocalists handling both singing and guitar playing.

    Source
  • The MS-3 is effectively used with the 4-cable method, dedicating an FX loop for amp integration while managing other pedals via its limited loops.

    Source

User experience

  • Initial programming of the MS-3 is challenging, but it becomes essential once mastered for pedalboard-centric setups.

    Source
  • Owners highlight the utility of the MS-3 as a true bypass looper for managing multiple drive pedals and effects like Tera Echo, enhancing live performance flexibility.

    Source
  • Some users find programming MIDI switchers like the Morningstar ML5 challenging, impacting their ability to achieve desired patch configurations.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • More affordable alternatives with limited programmability include GigRig Quartermaster and Disaster Area Designs DPC-8EZ, offering more loops for less cost.

    Source
  • Acquiring a used MS-3 for around $250 is considered a significant bargain compared to more expensive alternatives like the HX models.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users recommend using the MS-3's editor software for easier patch management and maximizing the unit's capabilities.

    Source
  • Compatibility with MIDI loop switchers such as One Control and Oscillator Devices Hydra4 offers budget-friendly expansion options under $200, though import fees may apply for some brands.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using the MS-3 with additional MIDI loop switchers can expand its capabilities, especially when integrating external dirt pedals and utilizing built-in effects post-amp.

Very versatile with few issues

The MS3 is VERY easy to programme and set up as you would expect from a BOSS product. I had owned one about a year ago which i sold as it gave me the bug for a switcher. I have since come back to it as its essentially now my Modulation effects and a switcher. I was going to go for an ES5 and the Boss MD 500 but this just made more sense to have both in one. My only 2 gripes, which are the same as when i first had are: 1. I wish there was a 5th present in each bank as 4 options can be restricting as i like to add in certain things when i feel like it. To combat this i simply placed a delay after the MS3 so i can switch it on whenever i like and i have placed 1 drive before it so i can add in dirt or boost (as its a dual drive) whenever i please. 2. There is only a Midi out. While i now have no Midi effects (with the MS3 i dont feel like you NEED them since it has so much built in) its still nicer to have the option if i chose to expand. Yes, with the Midi out you can still have the MS3 switch your units parameter or bank etc, but cant have it in the loops the same way you could with having the Midi In unless you then run that into one of the 3 inputs which are most likely going to have other drives in there anyway.

Aside from those 2 things, that are very easily admissible, it is an excellent unit.

The inbuilt effects are fantastic quality and its a solid built machine. Its very user friendly and there are a million and one tutorial videos online (highly recommend Rabea Massaads tutorial)

The way i looked at this was its essentially a BOSS MD500, RV500 and DD500 in one machine with the option to set up loops. Very handy even if its just used for the time/mod end of your board and nothing more.

EDIT I wanted to add that I'm aware of the functionality differences between the MS3 and the BOSS 500 series pedals such as the ability to have more than 1 effect on at one time, such as 2 delays on the DD at one time and 2 reverbs on the RV etc. I'm aware some may wish to do this for stereo set ups which i do not use so it makes no odds to me.

The thing I never knew I needed

Time goes by and I get a more & more minimalistic approach on music gear.

I'm done spending money on 1 box that makes roughly 1 sound.

Nice choruses, meh overdrives and dists, could be used as slight boosts though.

Rotary vibrato tremolo stuff are very convenient.

As a live musician, I need to pilot my sounds as simply as possible, and this is the best so far.

I use 2 loops for 2 pedals, and one in the amps FX loop to use fx after the preamp.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Use the 4 cable method in your amp, add a volume pedal in the EXP1 jack to pilot your overdrive, and you'll be on top of the world.
