Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Boss SL-2 Slicer.

Software and compatibility

  • The pedal's MIDI sync lacks clock divisions, but its USB port suggests potential for future firmware updates.

    Source
  • A Python-based web tool allows Mac OS users to edit SL-2 patches, addressing compatibility issues with virtual machines.

    Source
  • Users can create custom patterns by editing JSON files, though a first-party visual editor for pattern creation is absent.

    Source
  • SL-2 can sync BPM clock via MIDI, which integrates well with samples and synths despite the pedal's other usability issues.

    Source
  • The SL-2 can be set up with the Tone Studio app, which allows downloading premade patterns but not editing them directly.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The SL-2's MIDI clock input simplifies synchronization in setups involving complex timing, making it ideal for intricate compositions or covers.

    Source
  • The SL-2 is effective for creating a “train starting up and then running at full speed” effect when used with a Fuzz > Phaser > Slicer chain.

    Source
  • The SL-2 can reduce DSP burden when used with devices like the Zoia, offering granular chopping effects.

    Source
  • The SL-2 excels in creating a stereo image in ambient and RPG music, adding movement and texture without needing drums.

    Source

Comparisons

  • For those seeking less predictable patterns, a cheap tremolo might suffice, but the SL-2's advanced pattern capabilities can provide more complex and random effects.

    Source
  • The SL-2's capabilities are likened to the Roger Linn Adrenalinn III, performing better in controlled environments rather than live settings.

    Source
  • Users note that the SL-2 lacks the built-in looper present in the original SL-20 model.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Using an expression pedal with the SL-2 can introduce new dimensions to its effects, adding layers and control options not immediately apparent.

    Source
  • The SL-20's Autopan effect can add a tremolo on top of the Slicer effect, offering unique pulse effects when stereo output is tricked using a dummy plug.

    Source
  • The SL-20 includes a dry/wet blend feature, which might negate the need for a loop switcher to maintain a dry signal.

    Source
  • The SL-2 has 88 patterns across 8 modes, but users find the pattern organization illogical and challenging to navigate.

    Source
  • The SL-2 offers stereo modes, including a 3D rotation mode that significantly enhances the stereo image when paired with other stereo-capable devices like the Boss RE-2.

    Source
  • The external tap footswitch requires configuring the controller jack to tap tempo, with a specific emphasis on normally closed (NC) settings.

    Source

User experience

  • Some report difficulty achieving a proper square tremolo sound without significant volume loss, suggesting potential complexity with the attack knob.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners recommend using the tap tempo function, although setting it up with Boss compacts can be cumbersome without an external pedal.

Boss SL-2 Slicer Guitar Pedal Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Boss SL-2 Slicer is a rhythmic powerhouse that delivers a unique effect, blending intricate patterns with innovative stereo functions. It boasts an impressive selection of 88 presets, allowing for endless creativity, especially when paired with other effects. However, its compact design can make accessing certain features tricky and the learning curve is steep, requiring a manual at hand. While the confusion may deter some, the potential for sonic exploration is vast, making it a worthwhile addition for adventurous musicians looking to enhance their sound. At $169, it strikes a solid balance between value and creativity.

BOSS SL-2 Slicer review

musictech.com

The Boss SL-2 Slicer packs a lot into its compact design, offering over 80 patterns and MIDI sync capabilities, making it a compelling tool for live performance. However, the pedal's complexity and crowded layout can be daunting, and its confusing labeling might deter beginners. While it shines in creating stutter effects and rhythmic modulation, users may find that a DAW can achieve similar results with less hassle. Ultimately, the SL-2 is best for those ready to embrace its intricacies, but it might leave others feeling sliced and diced.

Would strongly recommend for use with synthesizers.

I don't even know where to start with the Slicer. This thing is amazing, especially with synths. I use it all the time for weird percussion loops, making rhythmic sounds out of drones, adding background elements to my songs and the weird stereo effects.

I haven't used it much with a guitar though, but I would imagine that the majority of regular guitarists wouldn't have much use for it, it is a really certain kind of pedal.
