Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender Super-Sonic 112 Guitar Combo Amp.

Setup and maintenance

  • Cable jacks are soldered to PCB boards, making them susceptible to breaking if jostled; it’s suggested to check all connections including send/returns.

    Source
  • Removing the tube cage and adding tube bands reduces noise; swapping the factory volume pot (1M to 250k) lowers noise by 5 decibels.

    Source
  • When replacing or fixing the speaker, ensure the amp is off and unplugged to avoid damaging the transformers by turning it on without a speaker load.

    Source
  • Cold solder joints are common; testing all major solder points is recommended to ensure reliability, especially on early models.

    Source
  • Early models may have a capacitor issue causing noise; replacing Illinois caps has resolved this for some users.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The gain channel includes two gain knobs affecting different preamp tubes, offering high tweakability while retaining a Fendery sound.

    Source
  • The Supersonic 22's clean channel lacks headroom past 2-3 on the dial, yet it remains capable of handling full band settings effectively.

    Source
  • The Super-Sonic 112 is known for its versatile sound, offering classic Fender cleans and a unique burn channel for a wide tonal range.

    Source

Use cases and applications

    Source
  • The amp excels in loud environments like honky tonk bars, handling everything from clean tones to saturated rock sounds effectively.

    Source

User experience

  • Channel switching may cause a loud pop; this varies by unit, and some report hiss and noise concerns.

    Source
  • Some users find the 60W version too loud for practical tube break-up at lower volumes, prompting considerations for volume management solutions.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend Greenback or Creamback speakers for preferred sound profiles, enhancing tonal quality.

    Source
  • Jensen speakers are often recommended, but a 75W ceramic speaker might better handle the amp's loudness without breaking up.

    Source
  • Owners suggest using a THD Hotplate attenuator or JHS Little Black Amp Box to manage volume levels without sacrificing tone.

    Source

Build quality

  • The amp's steel chassis can flex from heat, causing tube rattle; utilizing tube bands mitigates this issue.

    Source
  • Despite being a 1x12 combo, the Super-Sonic is notably heavy, comparable to larger amps like the Blues Deville 4x10.

    Source

Comparisons

Super-Sonic 112 Combo Review: The impressive reverb and Fender tube tone insured I was happy... | Fender | Guitar Amplifiers | Reviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com

ultimate-guitar.com

With its authentic Vintage Fender tube tone and impressive versatility, the Fender Super-Sonic 112 Combo Amp shines for blues and rock enthusiasts. It offers dual clean channels, exceptional reverb, and a burn channel for varied tonal possibilities. However, metal players might find it lacking in distortion without additional effects. The amp's volume can be overwhelming for small spaces, though it excels in larger venues. Reliability and durability are top-notch, making it a solid investment despite its weight. Overall, it’s a superb choice for those seeking classic Fender sound with modern flexibility.

Classic Fender cleans with a twist

Fender tube amp with reverb - tried and true clean tones. The switch for Bassman or Vibrolux is a unique feature that can help when switching from single coils to humbuckers. The Burn (distortion) channel is where this amp ventures into murky water, as the dual-knob gain structure takes some adjusting to get good tones. That said, if you spend a little time with it, you can definitely coax out the entire spectrum - Texas crunch, Lo-fi fuzz, vintage thrash. This is definitely not an amp for metal, but I pair it with my Marshall DSL100H and I can get any tone I want between the two.
