Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gibson SG Custom Triple-Pickup (Duplicate).

Features and functionality

  • The SG 3 has a limited edition version featuring 4 knobs, providing greater tonal control compared to models with a single volume and tone control.

    Source
  • The Kirk Douglas SG includes a master volume on the pickguard for volume swells and a 3-way toggle that blends the middle pickup via its own volume control.

    Source
  • The middle pickup on a 3-pickup SG setup cannot be used independently unless the volume is adjusted, highlighting a limitation in stock wiring configurations.

    Source
  • The SG Custom uses Custombucker pickups and is equipped with stock 50s electronics and wiring, including an ABR-1 bridge instead of the Nashville style.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report the neck on the Guitar Center exclusive 3-pickup SG as having a "fatneck" profile, describing it as "like butter," enhancing playability.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the comfort and light weight of the SG Custom for long gigs, despite occasional neck dive issues due to strap button placement.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • For the Gary Clark Jr. model with soap bar pickups, using P90-sized humbuckers like Dimarzio's prevents value loss and avoids complex routing.

    Source
  • Owners suggest modifying the wiring to have a master tone and individual volume pots for each pickup, allowing unique blending possibilities and improved tonal clarity.

    Source
  • Some users prefer the larger batwing pickguards on darker finishes, while others favor smaller pickguards on lighter or cherry finishes.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The '91-'92 triple pickup '67 Reissue SG Customs are noted for their rarity and often appear in cherry finish, with rumored yet unseen cream versions.

    Source
  • An SG owner is considering swapping stock Gibson burstbuckers for Arcane pickups, indicating potential for tonal improvement with aftermarket options.

    Source
  • The SG Custom's build quality, including attention to detail and quality control, is often compared favorably to other models, despite not always being seen as vastly superior.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The triple pickup SGs are often desired without a tremolo for more straightforward rock and blues applications.

    Source
  • Blending the bridge and neck pickups with partial middle pickup volume creates a clear, deep tone when used with fuzz, ideal for rock applications.

    Source

Build quality

  • The SG Custom's oxblood finish is noted for its deep, dark red color, which is a standout feature for many buyers.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Neck dive can be mitigated by relocating the strap button to the horn, a modification inspired by Tony Iommi's setup.
