A hardware vocoder can be a very fun and creative way to get ideas out as a non singer and still include vocals in your song.

Sky Harbor Studios, Owl City's personal studio, contains quite a bit of Roland hardware, including a VP-770.
At :37 of this video, Downes states he uses a Roland VP-770 and then demonstrates it.
"It’s good to have in the studio because the vocoder is a really useful item sometimes; it’s a way of arranging vocals without actually having to sing them, and it’s also a way of hearing what certain harmonies might sound like without having to do them. So from that point of view it’s a really useful piece of equipment. I would use it as a songwriting tool, absolutely," Horn says about his Roland VP-770, in this interview.
In this interview from 2014, Benn said : "Then there’s stuff that I’m playing with currently and am fascinated with, like the VP-770 or my disklavier (MIDI controllable piano)"
“The actual emulation of the VP-330 is really good but I’m hoping for better off the VP-770. I did a really stringent direct A-B test of one of our original VP-330 vocoders against the modeled one and it was good enough for me to go, ‘Look, I think we should go with this live.’”
At 2:19, the logo of the VP-770 can be seen in the video being played by The Royal Concept's lead singer, David Larson.
