Mackie MR5 & MR8 Mk2

soundonsound.com

Mackie's MR5 Mk2 monitors deliver impressive stereo imaging and a well-balanced sound at an affordable price, making them a strong contender for small to medium-sized studios. While the MR8 Mk2 offers deeper bass, the MR5's tighter low-end is preferred for clarity in compact spaces. Both models provide excellent value, though the MR8's bass can sound slightly overblown in smaller rooms. Overall, the MR5 Mk2 stands out for its adaptability and sound quality, offering a cost-effective alternative to higher-end Mackie monitors without significant compromises.

Mackie: MR5 active monitors | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The Mackie MR5 active monitors deliver surprisingly big sound for their compact size, with a strong bass presence and rich midrange detail. While the tweeter can become harsh at high volumes, the overall sound remains neutral and unhyped, making it excellent for mix translation. With an affordable price and clever design features, these monitors are a great value, though the high-frequency harshness should be noted.

Great value for the money...

Of course, there is way better monitoring speakers on the market. But they are perfect for a home studio. They provide a very good sound.

Good speakers for the money

These speakers are great for a small room and a small budget. Don't expect lots of bass though. either get a separate subwoofer or go for bigger 8" speakers.

What does your studio equipment consist of? When I'm actually at my bedroom studio I'm using a 27" iMac, logic, a billion 3rd party soft synths/ processors, axiom pro midi controller, M-audio profire 26/26 sound card and machine MR5 monitors. But realistically I'm usually just on my MacBook and a pair of headphones where ever and whenever possible!
