Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Vox AC15C1.

Use cases and applications

  • The AC15C1 is not ideal for bedroom use as it requires higher volume settings to achieve optimal sound quality. Consider the AC4 for lower volume environments.

    Source
  • At around 2 o’clock Channel Volume, you can achieve tones similar to "Summer of 69" even with Master Volume kept low, ideal for apartment settings.

    Source
  • Pairing the AC15C1 with pedals like BD-2, RAT, or Big Muff enhances its versatility, accommodating styles from blues to heavier rock tones at lower volumes.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Owners suggest the Fender Princeton Reverb for a more suitable low-volume, clean sound compared to the AC15C1.

    Source
  • Owners transitioning from a Marshall DSL1CR note the AC15C1's 12" speaker offers a more robust sound, improving tonal quality at higher volumes compared to an 8" speaker.

    Source
  • The Deluxe Reverb is noted for its superior reverb capabilities and sweeter tones, but some find it too loud for home use compared to the Vox AC15C1.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The AC15C1's master volume needs to be at least at 10 o'clock to effectively engage the power tubes for better sound quality.

    Source
  • The Master Volume controls both Normal and Top Boost channels, allowing for controlled volume while achieving crunch at lower settings.

    Source

User experience

  • Multiple owners note that the amp sounds best with slight breakup but is less effective with pedals at this setting.

    Source
  • Owners find the AC15C1 significantly heavy; handling it may require assistance, even for short distances.

    Source
  • The Vox AC15C1 is described as having a mid-focused, British tone with a distinct overdrive character, contrasting with the more neutral-sounding Deluxe Reverb.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using an attenuator like Two Notes can help manage volume without sacrificing tone, especially in small environments.

    Source
  • Replacing the stock speaker with a blue alnico or swapping tubes to JJ ECC803s longplates can improve tone, making the amp less bright and more rounded.

    Source
  • 1960s Sylvania tubes are recommended for their exceptional quality and affordability, often outperforming other high-end vintage tubes in the AC15C1.

    Source

Other

  • The amp can reach sound levels comparable to larger amps, clocking in at over 100 dB when cranked, making it suitable for loud environments.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The AC15C1's price recently increased to $999, but some retailers are still selling existing stock at $600, making it a good time to purchase.

Great Amp once tweaked to you taste!

Stock the amp was really good. The basic tone was there for me. Once I replaced the Reverb tank with the Mod 8EB2C1B, the speaker for A Weber 30 Watt 16? AlNiCo Blue Dog and better tubes, it is all the amp for my needs. (My wants are for other amps! GAS!)

tonylemieux

Great amp!

Kind of the standard of the industry for worship, chime, rock, Americana, decent volume for a 1x12, versatile, that vox chime but also warmth, depends how you dial it in, very present sounding, really brings out the sound of your guitars, good tremelo and very lush reverb, but I use pedals for that.

T

An all around performer

Crisp cleans from the normal channel and great edge-of-breakup tones from the top boost side. Takes pedals well, killer tremolo. The integrated reverb could use a shorter spring, the dwell (RT60) is a bit long for most applications, but works well enough if you don't have anything else. Don't expect extreme high gain tones from this amp, it's much better at blues and rock tones than it is metal.

jimmarchi1

just turn it all the way up with a treble boost into the normal channel, Queen high gain and then some, don't blow your speakers out though

dwnyguitar

The search for tone

The hunt was on. I was in search for TONE!!! After playing about a hundred different amps, the Vox AC15 was the winner. The Vox AC30 was a close second. This all tube amp has a big sound for such a little guy.

stran9ebrew

Very good amp

Love this amp perfect pedal platform great tones. I have have many amps throughout the years but this is one of my favorites ever.

matthewlane

Perfect for jangling, barre-chord heavy sounds with great overdrive

I use my AC15 and epiphone hollow-bodies to get my jangling, barre-chord heavy sound. It also overdrives amazingly. I only use the top boost input

mizrahy

Great Amp!

I have one and I have used it for countless gigs and other performances. I think it sounds great. I had to replace the tubes since the stock ones were losing their flavor. I think its a great amp for anyone who wants a classic brit or crunch sound

durmantyler

Lots of bark with the bite!

One of the bigger mistakes I made was trading this little guy away a couple years ago. Looking for one now - lots of raw tone and power that you almost don't need pedals to rock with. Classic British tone on a budget. Highly recommended for a serious local gigger or someone's first tube amp.

firewatcher

A childhood dream come true

I tend to stick to the top boost channel. I keep the bass at about 10 o'clock, the treble at about 2 o'clock, and the channel volume at 5 o'clock. Master volume and tone cut vary by room size

keepy

Supurb amp that has qualities that only a Vox can deliver!

I've owned and played many amps but have routinely gone back to a Vox AC30, until I tried the AC15. since then I've not had to look any further for recording or live use.

there are certain qualities of this amp that I've been unable to replicate with other amps, which makes this a must for me.

"I started with an AC15, a Vox, but eventually I went to an AC30 and then a Matchless. And then I got tired of all the big noise and I went back to the AC30. And I think I might be back at the AC15. If not, I've got four AC15s, four of the last ones, made and I'm going to make a room out of it. I'm going to put rubber all over them and it's going to be my kid's room. If my little kid hits his head I'll be like, 'Well, at least you hit your head on an AC15'. All of us have doubles of everything we've ever had."
