Description

Experience the return of the classic with the Gibson Les Paul Special Double-Cut Electric Guitar. This timeless instrument beautifully replicates the 1960 double-cut LP special, preferred by both alt-rock underdogs and celebrated musicians. The iconic double-cut design is a salute to the Les Paul Junior, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional ease, permitting effortless access to higher frets for thumb-over and thumb-behind players.

At its heart are the Custom Shop Soapbar P-90 pickups, lending this guitar its signature sound. These pickups are a perfect match for the Gibson's rich mahogany tone cocktail, providing just the right amount of bite and growl to a cranked tube amp. Experience everything from spangly cleans to the hard-edged crunch and fuzz-like undertones as you push this guitar into the breakup zone.

The Gibson Les Paul Special Double-Cut Electric Guitar is not just about the tunes but also about the experience. The vintage original sheen finish imparts an authentic vintage patina, giving the look and feel of a guitar that has been lovingly played and cared for over the years.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gibson Les Paul Special Double-Cut Electric Guitar.

Features and functionality

  • It's been noted that the Beato model lacks a traditional pickguard and features a silk-screened headstock overlay, making it less desirable for traditionalists.

    Source
  • Some owners prefer a clear coat finish over satin, finding satin finishes to feel cheaper and less durable.

    Source
  • The wrap-around tailpiece on the Les Paul Special Double-Cut enhances ease of play and bending, making it user-friendly for those transitioning from other models.

    Source
  • The neck on the 2015 model is notably wide, earning the nickname "surfboard neck," which some find uncomfortable compared to standard profiles.

    Source

Build quality

  • Owners report that the finish on the Beato model is thin, similar to a Tribute model, with open wood pores being uncomfortable on the neck.

    Source
  • The slab mahogany body and set-neck construction provide notable sustain and a firm feel, with some owners preferring the soap bar P90s over other styles.

    Source

    Source
  • The Les Paul Special DC is praised for its balance and lighter weight compared to SGs, minimizing neck dive and offering better strap comfort.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Eastman guitars are highlighted as a solid alternative to the Gibson Les Paul Special DC, praised for their build quality and value.

    Source
  • The Les Paul Special DC is likened to a more "raw" and "attitudinal" version of the Les Paul Standard, with some users appreciating its lighter and slimmer body.

    Source

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • A 2010 Gibson Les Paul Special DC with a gloss TV Yellow finish reportedly has no dead spots, especially around the 12th fret G.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • P90 pickups on the Les Paul Special are praised for their versatility, especially suitable for clean channels, punk rock, 90s alternative, and grunge styles.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • A switch from brass to titanium nuts is recommended for longevity, as brass nuts tend to wear down over time.

A great guitar for punk, rock, and rockabilly

TV Yellow has always been my Holy Grail, and the Les Paul Special has always been my favorite P-90 guitar. While P-90s are not good for heavy metal or especially high gain distortion, they are great for rockabilly, '70s-style punk, and all forms of classic rock. I have several Les Paul Specials, 2 singlecuts (one Epiphone, one Gibson), and 2 doublecuts (this TV Yellow Gibson, and a cherry Hamer USA). I bought mine from an online friend in 2017. I have only had a chance to gig her once to date, but she came through like a champ, and I'm looking forward to many more gigs.

Gotta love the P90's

Awesome guitar. Very well crafted and with a beautiful look. It's lightweight, easy to play (specially if you've got huge hands like I do) and luckily cheap. The automatic tuner works great and if you love its pickups, then this guitar is definerly for you!
