Description

Step into the past and experience the rich, organic modulation of the Dunlop Echoplex Delay EP103, a compact yet powerful delay pedal that captures the iconic warmth and musicality of the classic EP-3 tape echo unit.

Designed as an homage to the revered EP-3 tape echo, the EP103 takes the best of the past and updates it for today's musicians. It delivers the EP-3's legendary tones in a modern, reliable package that's smaller than a Phase 90. The delay control sets the time between repeats, ranging from 4 to 750ms, while the sustain control sets the number of repeats. The volume control, on the other hand, adjusts the output level of your repeats.

But where the EP103 really shines is in its Age mode. Here, your pedal performs as a perfectly calibrated, factory-fresh tape echo machine. A quick push of the volume knob lets you "age" the sound of your repeats, adding depth and richness as you darken the tone, increase the tape saturation, and ramp up modulation and tape distress.

The Echoplex Delay also features tap tempo functionality for up to 4 seconds of delay time, accessible when you connect an M199 MXR Tap Tempo Switch. And to ensure your dry signal remains untainted, the EP103 offers an all-analog dry path with Constant Headroom Technology, providing a full 20 volts of headroom.

Key Features:

  • Vintage Echoplex EP-3 tape echo warmth and modulation
  • Age control varies delay tone from pristine to dark and dirty
  • 4-750ms of delay time
  • All-analog dry signal path maintains your core guitar tone
  • Tap Tempo input via MXR M199 Tap Tempo Switch (sold separately)
  • Constant Headroom Technology for full 20 volts of headroom
  • True relay or trails bypass
  • Can be set for 100% wet mode along with stereo input and output modes
  • No tape cartridges required.

Beautiful, vintage, realiable

Since when i tried the pedal i thought it was special...

If you need flavor on your songs, or you need to build some climax on a song, or whatever you could imagine, this is the perfect choice for you. But not all that glitters is gold, if you need some delay for soloing it could be a little complicated (But not too hard) to add that flavor. The other cons that i find is that you do not have independent control on the tape age and flutter as the Strymon El Capistan, before you tell me > yes you have control on the tape aging bla bla bla>, yes you have it but you don't have it individually separated.

I don't know what else I could add to this review but give it a try on your pedalboard, specially if you dig the vintage vibes that you can hear on every 70s bands.

Very nice

The trails on this is just epic, organic and 3-dimensional. The bandwidth is wide so it sounds almost just as good with basses as guitars. All digital delays gets this kind of ugly static in the repeats when I play heavy handed with a lot of dirt in front of them. The grit just needs too much power to process and absorb I guess. I had to listen very hard to find the tiniest of static in this one. Maybe even an original Echoplex has a minimum of static too, so I can't say for sure that the tiny sizzle I heard shouldn't be there. The EP103 is by far the best sounding digital delay I have tried so far..

a lot of the problem with cloudy delay is related to phase in 1 amp rigs.... your delay signal is sharing a speaker with dry and even the speaker isn't working very hard often when the speaker is trying to reproduce the dry signal by 'pushing' it is being told to pull at the same time to produce one of the delays and this conflict causes phase distortion issues between the 2 notes the speaker is struggling to reproduce. It seems more noticeable with more hifi delays with no modulation. It doesn't really bother most of us, but tis there. The people it bothers follow o in the foot steps of brian may and build elaborate wet/dry/wet types of setups (this is helpful with modulation clarity as well)

Incredibly Dynamic

Honestly, this is the most functional delay I've messed with it. I have no need for all of the fancy delays, but this one gets everything done damn well. The repeats come out in a beautiful way, especially with the modulation added on. The trails are dirty enough to sound great but not enough to be annoying. Also love using this with the time set as low as it can go, for an excellent doubled sound. My favorite delay.

Love this pedal!

Awesome sounding! Instant jimmy page tape type effects, easy to make it self oscillate, added an outboard tap temp button now, 2 quick taps and instant slap back delay, highly recommended 👍

gary_dizon

I love this pedal so much that i removed my Carbon Copy from my board

The delays sound like an old Maestro Tape Echoplex. I lived and died by my Echoplex and also my Roland Chorus Echo for tape delays. The problems that developed with the tape delays were due to capstans hardening or wearing physically. This delay does that with age setting without the hassle the tape delays where physical vibration disrupts live performance.

Best sounding small Tape Echo

Great sounding tape echo with tape age. There are better sounding tape delays but they are all a lot bigger and take up more pedal board space. Derek Trucks also uses this pedal in the Tedeschi Trucks band.

i always wanted an ep 2 or wp 3 but there too expensive so i got the pre and delay when i could afford them
