Comparisons
-
While the Superego+ offers additional features like gliss and layering, the Freeze is appreciated for its simplicity and ease of use in sustaining sounds.
Source -
Unlike the Oceans 11 reverb pedal, the Freeze sustains a true copy of the original signal, not just the reverb, offering more pronounced sustain capabilities.
Source -
The Superego+ offers versatile effects like pitch shift, tremolo, and more, but its knob-based control system can be cumbersome for quick adjustments during live performances.
Source
Use cases and applications
-
The Freeze's latching capabilities allow it to be used creatively in post-rock projects to sustain extended notes and create drone effects.
Source -
The Freeze is praised for its ability to sustain a note or chord as an expressive solo component, allowing for simultaneous lead and rhythm playing.
Source -
Using a solid-state amp with the Freeze helps capture clean drones effectively, as the aim is not to push tubes but to layer effects over a stable signal.
Source -
The EHX Freeze allows for creating layered chord voicings, dense note clusters, and shifting pedal tones, enhancing jazz and ambient performances.
Source -
Splitting the signal with an ABY or tuner allows the Freeze to run into its own amp, maintaining clean pad sounds while applying distortion separately to the main signal.
Source -
Positioning the Freeze after dirt pedals but before fuzzy distortion can create unique crackly, bubbly fuzz drones, ideal for experimental or doom metal sounds.
Source -
For rhythm players, the Freeze can be latched just after chord changes to provide fuller soundscapes in a three-piece band setup.

Mods and upgrades
-
Owners recommend swapping the stock footswitch for a soft-click version to enhance performance, especially during quiet, ambient sessions.
Source
Features and functionality
-
The Freeze pedal's soft switch feature is now standard, eliminating the click sound that was distracting during low-volume ambient performances.
Source -
The Freeze pedal includes adjustable fade times, a feature not immediately obvious to some users, enhancing control over sound transitions.
Source -
The EHX Freeze captures a brief loop upon activation, and the volume of the frozen notes varies depending on when it is triggered during the sound's decay.

Interesting pedal!
This is an interesting pedal that i do use often, primarily when i go for huge crazy ambient sounds. I will often use this with reverb, delay, chorus, phaser, distortion, and volume swells.

Great for drone/ambient base
With dry-only output and less-clicky button mods, it is perfect.
Fun little toy.
This pedal is pretty nifty, I have it just to make noise at shows. I wish it had a few more features, I don't know what though.

According to this article Jonny Greenwood uses an Electro Harmonix Freeze Pedal, which can be seen on the photo of his pedalboard on the left side.
This photograph comes from MixOnline's article about recording Noel Gallagher's "Who Built The Moon". Judging by the many pedals already known to be in Gallagher's possession (Catalinbread Echorec, Strymon el Capistan) and the mention in the article that he owns over 300 pedals, we can certainly conclude that those were his pedals. One of the pedals that can be seen in the batch is the EHX Freeze Sound Retainer.

A compact, more tweakable evolution of the Freeze, per the official product description:
Meeting between the original Freeze and Superego pedals is the Pico Deep Freeze Sound Retainer. With the ability to freeze a moment in sound, the Deep Freeze can act as a sustain pedal for holding chords and notes as backing for your playing or as a platform to manipulate your tone into new sounds impossible with a normal guitar. In addition to the original Freeze’s abilities, the Deep Freeze features layering, adjustable attack/decay speeds, glissando, dedicated volume controls, and 3 modes: Latch, Moment, and Auto, making it powerful pedal punching well above its weight.
