  • Dark-sounding amp, may need overdrive pedal for brightness

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Peavey 6505+ 112.

Features and functionality

  • The 6505+ 112 relies heavily on its preamp for tone, allowing users to achieve signature sounds at low volumes.

    Source
  • The green channel can provide somewhat usable cleans with the crunch turned off, useful for metal cleans when paired with a pre-amp sim.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners note that the amp can sound decent at low volumes with careful volume knob adjustments, avoiding the need for an attenuator.

    Source
  • A volume knob or pedal in the FX loop is recommended for fine-tuning volume control, especially in bedroom settings.

    Source
  • The amp can start breaking up, or overdriving, at lower volumes, which may limit its use in home settings where loud volumes aren't feasible.

    Source
  • Pairing the 6505+ 112 with a Randall 2x12 cabinet loaded with V30s provides a powerful tone, particularly effective for metal genres.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Replacing the stock Sheffield speaker with a V30 is a common mod for those seeking a different tonal profile.

    Source
  • The Eminence Governor speaker is praised for its darker tone with more mids and a unique "quack," enhancing low-mid gain versatility compared to the V30.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The 6505+ 112 is compared to the Peavey Invective MH, with both benefiting from boosts for tighter sound.

    Source
  • The 6505+ micro head features distinct lead and crunch channels and may not suit home use due to early breakup at low volumes.

    Source
  • The Peavey JSX is considered more closely related to the Peavey XXX rather than the 6505, with distinct tonal origins.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • A simple soldering fix involves adding a .022uF cap across R86 to repair the effect loop buffer, making it usable.

    Source
  • The FX loop can overly brighten the tone, an issue some owners resolve by converting the combo into a head for better pairing with external cabinets.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Using a Pod HD500X with the 4 cable method allows for enhanced clean tones by simulating a Fender pre-amp directly into the power amp.

    Source

User experience

  • The Peavey 6505+ 112 is considered heavy and difficult to transport, which can be a drawback for gigging musicians.

Just change the speaker and you're set for life.

Bought it around 2010s. Best metal combo around. Get the addons and spend a little on your preferred speaker and you're golden.

Recommendations: (1) Get the footswitch. (2) Change the speaker. Sounds great with Celestion Creambacks.

Good points: (1) Great heavy to crunchy tones. (2) At the time affordable, and a decent investment - it has great re-sell value. (3) Has all the amenities of a good tube amp, fx loop and different outputs for external cabinets. (4) It's the type of amp you own for life, it's that good.

Bad points: (1) Not a great clean sound. (2) Needs a booster, preamp, overdrive or eq to get rid of the overall darkness - but it can also be done by changing the speaker. (3) Stock speaker is like a minus 3, if you don't have the monies or extra cab it's fine as it's a good amp but it's just a big and awful drawback. (4) Really bad reverb. Could have just changed it for an integrated brightness switch.

Incredible Deal!

These things are the same circuitry as a USA Peavey but made in China as a 112. Because of that, the price is much cheaper but the quality is the same. As is tradition with these things, mine is cut in half so I'm just using it as a 60w head. Sounds just as gutsy as a 120w and I don't think I've ever even wound the volume up to 2 going through my 16Ohm 2x12. All you can say about this amp is that it's a 5150. Exactly what you expect, nothing more and nothing less!

It’s a beast.

This is probably my favorite amp I own, great cleans and an AMAZING red channel.

Too big

It is so big, so we cut into a head and cab. Now I have an awesome 60w head and a 112 cab

Killer

This is the one for me, This thing sounds great. Loud enough to play with a drummer and has a killer tone.

Use it as a head!

Its an absolutely insane amp, even on the gentlest settings it sounds like someone's poking it in the side with a stick.

In the US and on the DVD we’d replace the Mesa with a Peavey 6505+ which sounds great. Love the sound of them.
