I traded this thoughtful riff on the venerable Boss SD1 overdrive to a friend along with all my drive pedals. This here is the one I missed. Not the amp in a box pedals and not the clones of klons.... I found myself digging through my stuff looking for my 80s sd1 to scratch my itch for assymetrical clipping in the feedback loop of a 4558 opamp! Fortunately my buddy didn't care fot his one (hes a TS9 man when it comes to this style of OD) and he returned my MXR with the stupid name. I am glad to have her back. She really combines well with an AC30 and the 100hz knob allows you to directly match the bass response of your clean or 'cleaner' dry amp setting and juidicious use of the toen control can prevent a jangly dry sound from being harsh when driven. It gives a lot of extra compression that maybe an ac30 does not need, but hey, its part of the whole SD1 thing and I for one have re-embraced it! It sounds like a pedal and sometimes that's okay. This pedal is great at being itself -- an SD1 with true bypass, better components, and the ability o work with any amp and any setting easily transitioning from clean to crunch or crunch to soaring LA strip solo without changing where you sit in the mix too much viz-a-viz bass and treble response! If you play a fender thru a fender or just plain prefer a TS9 or 808, the symmetrical version with the midhump centered in that Ibanez range is the Way Huge Green Rhino mk2 or later. George Tripps designed both of these pedals. The Way Huge versions are TS inspired with the bass ut/boost and adjustable mid-hump level. This takes some fo the same ideas and applies them to the SD1 for those of us who mostly play Gibson style guitars thru Marshalls and Voxes.

The best overdrive pedal I ever had!

(Updated) I believe I've found the best overdrive pedal. MXR did an amazing job with this one. It provides all the control you may need, going from a very soft and slim "bluesy" overdrive all the way to a fat drive, with all the mid-bass and body you need. I only play humbucker loaded guitars, especially Les Pauls. I tried to use it to push my Boss DS-1 and my ProCo RAT2... worked great with both! Then I tried this pedal with a reverb to play chords from Hard-Rock iconic bands, and it worked beautifully... If you're looking for that overdrive pedal that will make you forget all those 2 or 3 you have on your pedalboard right now, give the MXR Custom Badass Mod OD a try. I was searching for something to take my sound a level up after 10 years with my SD1, and this is the one.

Very versatile Overdrive.

MXR quality. Monstersound. And with a bass and a treble-knob a very usable partner. My problem with most every overdirve and distortion pedal: one push and you loose all your bass frequencies (Tubescramer, RAT) or you get untaming highs (DS-1). After years of serching, i mostly use overdrive pedals with "four knobs" like MXR Custom Badass Modified OD, MXR Super Badass, Digitech Bad Monkey or the Caline Pure Sky transparent drive*. Now nothing gets lost and i get nothing i don't need. The MXR Custom Badass Modified OD is a warm, natural sounding, mid boosting overdrive – transparent, with a lot of sweet harmonics and more gain than a tubescreamer. Too expensive? Searching for an alternative: Take the Digitech.

Control is everything...

I personally used this as a 'pre amp', or an alternative to the clean gain control on my amp. I was searching for something cheap that would give my clean channel a bit of a 'bite' to it. not only does the badass do that. It offers complete control in tone, and with the 100Hz control, you are able to get the treble and tone you desire, whilst keeping up with the bass and lower frequencies, output from my clean channel. Overall a great buy with a great first impression and controllability without distortion.

Insanely good tubescreamer alternative

These things are cheaper than a tubescreamer, and they're better. The 100hz knob makes it more useful for tightening up an ERG through something like a rectifier. Being a tubescreamer circuit, it is very versatile and quite simple. Decently easy to dial in and sounds amazing.

Great Pedal

I had to own this once I saw the demo for it. I have never been happier with an overdrive. It was the first drive pedal I ever purchased, and it still adds an extra something that other overdrive pedals I have tried just don't seem to have. The 100 Hz Boost is especially appealing to me, as well as the transparency of this drive at low gain levels.

A must have

This pedal is never off on my board, I use it mainly as a clean boost and then stack it with other gain pedals. The 100Hz parameter is a wicked addition.

Don't leave home without it

My go to Overdrive no matter what tone I'm going for, is highly versatile, especially with the 'Bump' button, and has a great sound overall

Plexi type tone

Does not have all of the dynamics that I wish it would have, but it will take you from clean to a PLexi style breakup and distortion. Bump button and 100hz frequency knob help to balance out tone between different guitars
