Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster.

Build quality

  • The pedal is notably large, occupying space equivalent to three standard pedals, which some find excessive given its functionality.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Uses a starved plate design with 9v power, resulting in limited headroom and quick distortion onset.

    Source
  • The VT999 includes a three-band EQ and a built-in noise gate, enhancing tonal flexibility and reducing unwanted noise.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Swapping the stock tube can improve distortion quality, although achieving a clean tone remains challenging.

    Source
  • Substituting the stock 12AX7 tube with a lower gain tube like a 12AY7 or 12AT7 can decrease overall gain for more nuanced control.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for achieving a trashy, garage rock sound, but less effective for clean or lightly overdriven tones.

    Source
  • Owners use the VT999 as a preamp with minimal gain settings, effectively simulating a tube amp's characteristics.

    Source

Comparisons

  • A MXR Sugar Drive is preferred by some for clean boosts, while a Rat clone like the Mooer Black Secret suits more overdriven sounds better.

    Source

User experience

  • Users find the pedal excels as a dirty channel on clean amps, providing effective EQ adjustments to tailor amp sound.

I've been using it for years

If you want a taste of the tube in your signal chain, grab this pedal. This pedal has been on all the pedalboards I've built for years. You will be amazed at the sound after the original tube replacement.

Love the thing

I used to use the old one I was ashamed of it being so cheap so I taped around the logo and they burnt out but the new ones are awesome I always get these and put better valves in them indefensible to my sound really recommend.

Fantastic

Amazing distortion! Use it on bass in the studio all the time. Can't fit it on my board though!

joris_van_dorpe

bad pots, huge casing, good effect

flimsy pots, as with all behringer pedals. Probably one of the best overdrives within it's pricerange. This comes at a cost that It takes up about the room of three normal sized pedals on a board.

Bugera Tube sucks

Change the tube, 'cause the soundis to crispyand not vintage-like.

tuckerofthorraxe

Useful.

Ibanez Tube King maybe? It rules. Play around with swapping tubes.
