Description
Introducing the Electro-Harmonix Op-Amp Big Muff Pi - a faithful reissue of the coveted late-'70s classic, designed to deliver the iconic fuzz effect at a pocket-friendly price. This compact pedal leverages op-amps rather than transistors and three gain stages instead of four to generate its signature sound. Adored by many, including Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, the Op-Amp Big Muff was a significant component of the band's unique sound in their 1993 album, Siamese Dream.
This reissue retains the magic of the original while being encased in a robust, die-cast chassis. It also incorporates practical enhancements such as true bypass switching, preserving your tone when the pedal is not in use. The controls for volume, tone, and sustain allow you to quickly dial in the fuzz-laden and explosive textures your music demands. An additional tone bypass toggle temporarily circumvents the pedal's tone circuit for maximum output and aggression.
Key Features:
- Faithful reissue of the late-'70s op-amp Big Muff Pi
- Utilizes op-amps and three gain stages for its unique sound

- True bypass switching to preserve tone when not in use
- Independent volume, tone, and sustain controls

It is a Big Muff. Muff said.
Like pretty much everyone else, I got this at the height of my Smashing Pumpkins phase, but it's stayed on my board ever since. Perfect kick-up when you already have distortion going and want to cut through without just throwing on more excessive loudness (though it will very much do that too if you wish). I've tried a couple other Big Muffs and stand by this as my favourite, but there is something to be said for it's limited number of tones - if you ever grow tired of its distinctive sound, you can't really do a lot to change it without involving other pedals.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Somewhat controversially I like using it with the volume pushing a low wattage solid state to get that rumbly, Eruptor sound. Don't think it's supposed to do that though (don't tell Mike)

Fantastic.
Really helps get a thick fuzz and a nice booming switch from clean to sweet, dirty, and powerful fuzz.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Sustain at Max, Volume at 1:00 and the tone somewhere between 12:45 and 2:00. Really exact but anything there will be awesome, and a mix of sweet thickness and some gnarly clarity.

If you like hard grunge it will be the one
Great fuzz pedal that if you want tones like smashing pumpkins, alice in chains, nirvana, etc. it will be ideal. If you are looking for something different there is a wide range of big muff.

The THICC Boi
One of my favourite fuzz pedals of all time. Thick, very capable of saturation, but can also cut through a mix very well.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Vol: 2:30-3:00 Tone: 9:00-10:00 Sustain (gain): Turn up until full saturation is reached (usually about 2:00, depending on what else is on the board/amp).

THIS PEDAL IS MAGIC!
Cannot recommend this enough if you love the sound of early Smashing Pumpkins this is the go to. Huge rich fuzz tones that make me giddy every time I hear them. Whenever I plug in and play this pedal it makes me want to create music and gives me that feeling I had when I first started to play guitar. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR GET THIS PEDAL!

oh the crunch
Can't really tell anything about the usage in hendrix-like music. But it is surely great for some destruction, especially with the op amp on. Also would work well in some stoner metal stuff

A modern take in a classic tone
This orange-color fuzz gives a nice gain color to your chain. It makes a nostalgic old-smashing pumpkins vibe that no one could resist

A thing of beauty
This pedal is a thing of beauty. Was looking to get a Big Muff for a pedalboard I was putting together and after seeing the Billy Corgan demo of the Op-Amp I had to have it. Here's a demo I recorded for music page a few months back (apologies for the dodgy camera, my phone was kinda broken at the time!)

Great big muff
my mom got me one used like new off of amazing for 89 bucks, and it is amazing. When I run it at the same time as my DS-1 or Green Russian it is amazing. I 100% recommend.

also, all of my current albums (the covers, hell unleashed in Wichita, and whatever album Western Nights pt2 [I cannot remember]) I have not used this as they are all done on GarageBand, but plans for Hell Unleashed in Witchita Pt2 will have me using the iRig and I will use it on that or any electric demo tapes with this big muff.

Loving it.
Really loving this fuzz at the moment. It gets a wide variety of tones, from over-the-top blazing fuzz to more subtle pushes of tone. They got a lot of things right here.

He was involved in the making and promotion of this reissue pedal (the orange color is probably a reference to Smashing Pumpkins) with Electro Harmonix. He used his Op Amp Big Muff to get the Siamese Dream sound, so a standard Big Muff won't quite get the same sound. It'll get you close, but the Op Amp version is the one you want if you're trying to get the same gear he used. This video shows him using the pedal & talking about it.
In Gerard Way's "Fuzz Wars" series on Instagram, he writes this:
I believe this is a reissue of a vintage Big Muff like the one Billy Corgan used on Siamese Dream. I’m using this quite a bit lately.

Mentioned in the article interview by Guitar World 02/11/2020
"From here the signal goes to a JHS Morning Glory (“That’s my second, more-distorted kind of rock ’n’ roll sound. I used to have a Soul Food. I really liked the Soul Food, I have no idea how Carlos ended up having it”) before heading into a ProCo Rat or Electro-Harmonix Op-Amp Big Muff. “I’ve started using fuzz on a few songs. I like how it sits in the mix more than distortion for some tracks.”
