Electro-Harmonix Small Stone Nano review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Electro-Harmonix Nano Small Stone is a compact powerhouse for phasing enthusiasts. Praised for its diverse sound range, the Nano maintains the original's simple controls—Rate knob and Color switch—allowing for both subtle and bold phasing effects. While it replicates vintage tones, it adds a brighter, more intense sweep, especially at slower rates. Though it lacks the warmth of some competitors, its versatility in producing classic 'underwater' sounds and even metallic ring mod tones makes it a standout choice. Ideal for those who appreciate an obvious effect with minimal downsides, the review is overall positive.

Whooooshhh

The older galvanized nano versions are the way to go. The new black powder coated nano versions have a slight volume boost (which can be a good or bad thing depending on what you need). Regardless, it has an impossibly hard to beat phase effect that is both sparkly and whooshy.

Avoid

Redesigned black box with swirly psychedelic font: not a good phaser at all. Very bright and the effect goes almost dry at some points of the sweep. You won't be able to get any of the famous sounds created by the vintage units - try to play anything by Tame Impala and you will clearly notice it sounds wrong due to that sweep.

G

Durable, Reliable, Wonderful

I've had this thing for a couple years, carried it around in gig bags where it's been bumped and sat on etc, and there is not one single scratch on this thing and if that doesn't count for something then I don't know what does. Sound wise it's pretty nice, the switch allows for changing between a subtle wavy sound and what you would guess a fisherman would hear crashing against his boat in the middle of a typhoon. The rate when turned up high also creates a flangy sound for anyone who's interested in that. There's not truly anything special about it I suppose but for what it is, it works great.

legendary Sound!

Second fiddle only to the MXR Phase 90 right? This thing is amazing. Great sound. Super easy and intuitive controls. Great size from a legendary company!

Best phaser

Compated to MXR Phase 90 this one is more gentle, dreamy, has a greater speed range, greater frequency range sweep, so a little bit at odds with the guitar tones, which are midrange-focused, but has great potential with other instruments. Have you heard Small Stone on Rhodes? (go watch it on YouTube). There is also a slight difference between vintage Small Stone and the Nano one. The modulation in vintage pedal is more smooth and less noticeable (there are also YouTube videos with the comparison). Also, why is it so rare for good phasers to have proper depth control? Overall, you can't substitute Small Stone with Phase 90 or vice versa. You need both pedals.

drake_foster

Can't go wrong with the small stone.

The small stone was a pretty well known phaser, and this nano variant doesn't disappoint either. It has a nice warmth to its phasing sound that's often missing on other 4-stage phaser pedals like the MXR Phase 90, and the Maxon PT-999. Of course there are phasers out there with more bells and whistles, but I prefer the simplicity of a one knob phaser.

B

Tiny phaser, great for instant results

A great pedal that gets you straight into what makes a phaser so alluring - that thick, swirling whirlpool tone is right there from the stomp with this unit. While I generally keep this pedal's Rate control turned more towards 10 o'clock, a lovely Leslie-style shimmer can be achieved by turning the Rate up from 3 o'clock onwards. This pedal is housed in a thick, sturdy metal casing and takes up such little space its hard to believe that such a small unit has the capacity to retain a stellar sound. The downside to this is there aren't as many parameters to tweak as I would like on a phaser unit. This unit only comes with a Rate variable and a 2-way Colour switch (keeping the Colour up maintains a lot of mids whereas flipping it down seems to scoop out the midrange and fattens up the lower frequencies), which may be lacking for a lot of players who are looking to find a main phaser pedal in their rig. Variable Colour, Mix and Feedback would be an excellent edition, yet there are plenty of bigger phaser pedals out there that will offer these features. If you're looking for a basic, affordable yet lush phaser - this is a great option.

Great phaser that respects your signal

It´s a really good sounding phaser. With the color switch down it gives a moderate phasing that respects your tone and gives a full sounding guitar, without drops in volume or tone during the phasing. I say this because other phasers and this one with the color switch up do that, making the guiar sound weird with the drops and jumps in the signal. I like the color switch up when the rate is really fast. The only thing i don´t like is the small drop in volume while using it because it affects the presence.

Endors Toi

Had the old big box classic chassis, unfortunately had to remove it because it's too huge. The nano is not as versatile as the old one when you max the rate, where you can get really fast worbly sound. Anyhow, pretty similarly good and it's still better than any phaser in my opinion.

B

Better than the MXR

It's warmer, more natural, and more versatile than the Phase 90. The color switch can take you from Waylon Jennings to outer space.
