PROS

  • Enhances tube amp emulation effectively

  • Versatile: can be used as a clean boost, for light to heavy overdrive, or even as a bass booster

  • Adds a mid-range focus that cuts through in band settings

  • Works well when stacked with other pedals

  • Provides a significant volume boost without altering original tone too much

  • Can achieve a wide range of sounds, from blues to metal

  • Iconic, classic overdrive sound that many famous guitarists use

  • Simple three-knob layout makes it easy to dial in the desired tone

  • Works well with both tube and solid-state amps

  • Durable construction and reliable performance

CONS

  • Can lack low-end, especially when used with certain guitars and amps

  • Not everyone loves the characteristic mid-hump

  • Some find it too similar in sound to cheaper alternatives

  • Tone control can be finicky, with some settings sounding thin or muddy

  • Non-true bypass can be a downside for tone purists

  • May not suit players looking for a more transparent overdrive

  • Can be noisy, especially at higher gain settings

Critic Reviews

Legendary Tones - Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer Reissue

legendarytones.com

The Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer reissue is a nostalgic nod to the 80s, lauded for its authentic design and robust Japanese construction. Its soft-clipping distortion is perfect for blues and rock, offering extra sustain and drive, although it may sound a bit harsher than the vintage original due to component changes. As a boost pedal, it shines, enhancing the tone of tube amps, but might fall short as a standalone overdrive in providing a full-bodied sound at higher volumes. Overall, it's a meticulously crafted enhancer for tone aficionados but not a catch-all solution for modern distortion needs.

The Buttercream Icing to any Amp Cake

I have had many times where I plug into an amp with no pedals and go "Wow that sounds great!" but then I put the TS9 in front and go "Okay; NOW it sounds amazing!" and then I can't play that amp without it anymore. This pedal has spoiled me for tone. My only complaint is, like many overdrives, it's a bit noisy. I use a Smart gate right after it to sort that out.

philip_bernard

Its great

Just like the DS-1, I got this pedal because it seems like the most popular overdrive pedal. Now, having experience with the pedal, I can say that I really like the sound. In my opinion it gives the perfect tone and crunch to the sound I want. My settings are just like how all the old guys did it. I have the drive rolled back, and a boosted level. It's great!

chrisdasilva

One of the best

There's a reason many famous guitarists use this pedal. The sound is really amazing. I would describe it as an overdrive pedal, rather than a distortion pedal. I can get nice, subtle overdrive out of it, and then crank up the drive to get some great heavy overdrive perfect for lead. I'm pretty sure I'll never replace it, however I have thought often of adding another to it, so that I have both my favorite settings ready to go during live performances.

darrell_qualls

Best Overdrive ever. Period.

Bar none, the best Overdrive pedal on the market presently and in the past. If you are looking for proof of this all you have to do is search "Tubescreamer users" and you will find everyone from SRV to Nashville power houses. The tubescreamer can and will do everything from clean boost to straight up hard driving cranked tube amp tones. Very reliable and very affordable.

quaraintined_buritto

great for bass

i got this pedal because i saw that cliff burton used it and i wanted to get his tone

Preferred Settings + Usage:

my favorite setting on the pedal is probably drive at 2 o’clock, level at 12 o’clock and tone at 8 o’clock

jimmy_strummer

..

I use it more as a boost than my main overdrive, but sounds really nice either way. Turn the drive up and you get a really thick distortion, keep the drive low and you get a simple well-rounded gain boost. Not leaving my pedalboard anytime soon.

ryanrbrown

Great in so many ways.

Obviously the Tube Screamer in general has been a staple in so many boards for the longest time, but all of the hype around it is absolutely true. This pedal can do everything from a nice transparent overdrive, to a thick saturated rhythmic overdrive. I also like to use it as a boost on my crunch channel to give it that kick for a solo or lead tones. Pair this with a strat and you can get the nicest blues tones too, give it just enough drive to start breaking up and you can go from clean to dirty just with a little extra gusto on your pick strokes. The high mid range of this also helps when using it to layer on other pedals that have an EQ. Love it and will always have one.

luke_bosley

A must have

amazing! this guitar pedal is a must have to any sort of guitar pedal setup.

drrrty_harris

Is a review even necessary???

I'm not even gonna review this... Just go and look at the list of artists that have this on their pedalboard. Probably THE standard overdrive. If you're thinking of getting a new pedal, and you don't yet have this one on your pedalboard... well, do an about-face and go and get one of these babies immediately!

L

Amazing O/D pedal.

I mainly use this for my Cliff Burton bass rig I am putting together. Works very good with the wah I own (Morley PWB) as it "Boosts" the level of wah so it is easier to be heard in your signal chain, really makes it scream too. I also sometimes use this just as an O/D with my guitar, and it is an amazing pedal.

And then we have an Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer, which you know, that's made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan was a big proponent of those and then that's a very very popular you know. It's an overdrive pedal, it's not quite a distortion. Like if you put it into a clean amp you'd still be missing a little bit, but that will drive a little bit dirty head into a great luxurious big sound. Great overdrive.
